Neurotech Collider Lab ENSURE Program Launches with Support from the Dana Foundation
By: Niki Borghei and Keith McAleer
Addressing the Global Mental Health Challenge
With generous support from the Dana Foundation, we are pleased to announce the launch of the Equitable Neurotech Solutions for Underserved Regions Everywhere (ENSURE) program. The proposal is supported by the Dana Foundation’s NextGen program, which seeks to catalyze a new generation of interdisciplinary experts who will transform neuroscience and neurotechnology by prioritizing societal needs throughout their research and development.
This novel program is built around a 16-week course that will empower students to drive the progress of neurotech solutions, fostering a future where technology and healthcare merge to enhance lives for all.
Through an innovative introduction to the field of neurotechnology and creative approaches to understanding real-world problems and potential solutions we hope to inspire students to make significant strides in providing a more comprehensive way to address the burgeoning mental health crisis, particularly for those without direct access to affordable health care.
Mental health is a critical concern across the globe, and in the United States, underserved communities face disproportionate challenges. Traditional mental health systems often fall short for these populations, hindered by barriers such as high costs, stigma, and inadequate access to specialized care.
Enter neurotechnology—a groundbreaking field with the potential to transform mental health treatment and make it more inclusive.
A Vision for Equitable Innovation
With this generous grant from the Dana Foundation, ENSURE will create a dynamic framework for interdisciplinary education and innovation that can be applied to many areas of need. Students in this course will include undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. By integrating fields such as data science, clinical research, business, arts, social sciences, policy, ethics, and law, ENSURE will foster a holistic approach to problem-solving in the field of mental health and beyond!
The course will immerse students in practical experiences that turn theoretical knowledge into real-world understanding with the ultimate goal of producing actionable solutions.
Students will experience a blended learning approach where they review materials and lessons before class, allowing for more interactive and practical in-class activities. Guest speakers will provide targeted insights, and activities such as group discussions and case studies will promote collaboration and real-world application of knowledge. The course will also prepare students to handle ethical issues related to cultural sensitivity and sustainability.
